Marco Rubio is really stepping into shoes he isn't able to fill, and it's all because of his boss's orders and his own obedience. Today's X feeds were blessed with another joke on the 54-year-old 'jack of all trades' as images of his feet went viral.
Rubio seemed to be wearing $145 Florsheim dress shoes, a pair reportedly gifted to multiple cabinet secretaries by Trump himself. However, what caught the eyes of the curious cats of the internet was that Rubio's shoes appeared to be on the large size with a noticeable gap between his heel and the back of the shoe.
"Knowing the second @marcorubio put the oversized shoes on, and not removing them immediately due to being too big, shows you just how much power Trump has over this Cabinet of fools," wrote one user on X.
"There’s something deeply poetic about the world’s most powerful country being run like a provincial wedding party where the boss buys everyone the wrong shoes and expects loyalty in return," added another.
The shoe show
One of the first spotlights on Trump's shoe shenanigans was put on December 5, 2025, when the President halted an Oval Office meeting for an unusual shoe inspection. At an event honouring Sylvester Stallone, Vice President JD Vance was speaking to the reporters when Trump interrupted, "‘No, no, no, hold on a second.
There's something much more important. Shoes.’”
According to Vance, Trump barely hesitated before pointing out the footwear in the room. "He peers over the resolute desk and he says, Marco, JD, you guys have sh*tty shoes."
Apparently, the President then grabbed a catalogue, claiming there was a politician in the room, whom he wouldn't name, who 'runs us through this incredible shoe catalog' and then gifted both Vance and Rubio four pairs of shoes. “He says, Marco, what's your shoe size? And Marco's apparently an eleven and a half. He says, JD, what's your shoe size? My shoe size is 13. I asked this politician, who I won't embarrass, what his shoe size is, and he says, seven. The President leans back in his chair and says, you know you can tell a lot about a man by his shoe size,” shared Vance.
Trump's gifting obsession
It seems Vance and Rubio aren't the only ones. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the President of the United States of America has been gifting shoes to executives ranging from agency heads, lawmakers, White House advisors and VIPs.
"Did you get shoes?" seems to be a normal query from him to someone in the cabinet meetings. He even went on about his "incredible" new shoes in a January lunch meeting and gifted a pair of brown wingtips to Tucker Carlson.
“All the boys have them,” said a female White House official. Another joked, “It’s hysterical because everybody’s afraid not to wear them.”
Trump has even taken to guessing people's show size in front of them and asking an aide to put in an order. A week later, a box arrives at the White House and reaches the beneficiary, sometimes with Trump's own signature on the box or a note of gratitude, as per people familiar with the new ritual that has taken over the Republican cordiality.
Who are the recipients? Until now, the names include VP JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Trump's communications director Steven Cheung, deputy chief of staff James Blair and speechwriter Ross Worthington along with Fox News personality Sean Hannity and Senator Lindsey Graham.
The esteemed $145 pair of shoes
A wingtip, loafer or monk strap, in black or brown, Trump is gifting all kinds of shoes to anyone he likes, all on his own cash. As per WSJ, he fell in love with Florsheim, a century-old American brand known for pairing comfort with style. It seems he began searching for a comfortable pair in 2025, one that would feel better after a day on the job and settled on the brand.
He liked them so much, that along with wearing the pair he has also entered into a gifting spree. What more? They are affordable- many costing $145.
However, it seems the company might be unaware of the generous PR the POTUS himself is providing it. Weyco Group CEO and fifth-generation Florsheim, Thomas Florsheim Jr. said he was unaware of the President's shoe orders, when contacted by WSJ.
However, there are two interesting associations to be aware of when acknowledging that Trump is supporting Florsheim. One, considering his larger anti-agenda and dislike for immigration, he is supporting a brand established by a German immigrant. In 1892, Florsheim was founded in Chicago by Sigmund Florsheim, a cobbler and his son, Milton. The brand outfitted American soldiers in both world wars and was worn by former President Harry Truman and pop star Michael Jackson.
Another is the fact that the brand's parent company Weyco Group is suing the Trump administration over tariffs. According to a recent Business Insider report, the group sued the federal government in December over tariffs, as per a complaint filed in the US Court betting that the US Supreme Court could strike down the tariffs that Trump enacted under the International Emergency Powers Act. The company also requested a refund, with interest, of the $16 million it paid in tariffs last year, if the policy were struck down.
A MAGA cult to be recognised from a mile?
What many reports have been postulating is something that has been in the works ever since Trump came back to power: A MAGA cult. While the FLOTUS seems to be leading the females with Botox fillers and power dressing from high-end brands, it seems Trump finally felt FOMO enough to initiate something of his own.
Thus, the gifting spree matches MAGA not only in minds and tongues but also in appearances. The Republican leaders follow the President not only in sharp suits and bizarre comments, but also in their footwear.
It seems the decision is much to the chagrin of many, as the WSJ report claimed one cabinet secretary grumbled about having to shelve his Louis Vuittons, as per some who heard the complaint.
Shoe or show?
Trump's small obsession with attire is visible to all. The billionaire's expensive Brioni suits, long red ties and a red cap that has catapulted America into pretending it's summer even when it's winter, scream about his penchant for aesthetics.
No one, not even Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky himself has forgotten the moment when Brian Glenn, chief White House correspondent for Real America's Voice asked him about not wearing a suit. "Why don't you wear a suit?" Glenn asked. "You're at the highest level in this country's office, and you refuse to wear a suit.
"Do you own a suit?" he continued. "A lot of Americans have problems with you not respecting the dignity of this office." To which, both Trump and Vance could be seen laughing. In their next meeting, Zelenskyy was spotted donning a formal jacket and trousers, gaining a compliment from the President himself: "You're all dressed up today."
While the president's shoe-gifting tendency might be inspired by the wish of creating a more assimilated look for his team or just influencing them to wear "better", it could very much be a result of his own fetish for himself.
In 2024, he launched a line of sneakers at Sneaker Con in Philadelphia, something we wanted to do "for a long time." The line called Trump Sneakers, featured three different pairs of tennis shoes: a pair of high-tops, a pair of red laceless aesthetic shoes and a pair of white laceless athletic shoes. Prices varied at $399 and $199, they came with extra laces and a Trump "superhero charm." Along with it, he launched a "Victory 47" perfume and cologne, which sold for $99 each.
Trump is known for his fondness for influencing, people and things both. He has also created coins minted with his own face, sold gold watches for $100K, renovated the Presidential Hall of Fame, and is in the process of building a 250-foot Independence Arch for America's 250th anniversary.
While one might never know the real reason the POTUS is gifting shoes to his employees, it surely raises one question—that of the subtle effort to create an almost Nazi-like uniformity among his soldiers? Assigning them a uniform that they could never say no to, creating an anti-immigration agenda, and hailing Americans as superior to any other nationality in the world, the similarities just keep on increasing...
